Modern SMS text messaging is understood to be messaging from one mobile phone to another mobile phone. Commercial person-to-person SMS text messaging service began in 1994. Finland became the first nation where SMS text messaging was offered..

The first text messaging service in the United States was provided by American Personal Communications, the first GSM carrier in America.

Initial growth of text messaging was slow, with customers in 1995 sending on average only 0.4 message per GSM customer per month.

Today, text messaging is the most widely used mobile data service, with 80% of all mobile phone users worldwide.

In 2007 subscribers sent an average of 27 texts per day. Today, U.S. smartphone owners aged 18 to 24 send 2,022 texts per month on average — 67 texts on a daily basis — and receive another 1,831. That’s nearly double their slightly older peers, smartphone users aged 25 to 34.
