Today is National Pet Day! This holiday is all about appreciating and celebrating the wonderful pets in your life. Who knew that there are approximately 86.4 million pet cats and 78.2 million pet dogs living with their forever families in the United States today? We cannot forget about the countless gerbils, birds, turtles, and fish that are also members of families.

If you consider your pet a member of the family, you are by no means alone. Does your pet sit at the dinner table with you? Does your dog go everywhere in the car with you? Do you always find that extra stop to take home a special treat when you pet is waiting at home for you? You are not alone!

National Pet Day was founded to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption, as there are many pets waiting for their furever home with you! Shelters on any daily basis have pets young and old needing to find that one person willing to welcome them into their home.

Today is intended to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting their forever home in shelters all across the nation. There are numerous pets who need your love, if you are looking for a new member for your family, begin at the local shelters, rescue an animal that needs a second chance at love. I promise you that is the best unconditional love, most satisfying love that will continue to grow for many years.

To celebrate National Pet Day, take your dog on a long walk or give your cat a little extra catnip to show your love and appreciation. Not a pet owner? Consider making a donation or volunteering at your local pet shelter. Happy National Pet Day!

National Pet Day serves several purposes. National Pet Day, also referred to as Pet Day USA, celebrates all creatures great and small. For many Americans, pets are not just dogs or cats – they are beloved members of the family.
