September 6 we celebrate National Read A Book Day. Today is about everyone, book lovers and non book lovers alike to find a book they would enjoy, either to read alone or share the love of that book with a friend old or new! Find a nice, quiet and relaxing spot to sit back and read for a while.
Turn off the television and other electronics and enjoy the peacefulness of reading a book. Take a step back in time and imagine yourself in that era! Read to your kids, encourage them to read to you, learning is fun and reading is a blast! Let their imagination run wild with a tale or two!
Reading is very good for a person on many levels, it can help improve memory and concentration as well as reducing stress levels.
Reading books is shown to be among brain-stimulating activities shown to slow down cognitive decline in the elderly. Reading has shown to help slow the decline in memory as well.

Imagine some of the first books!
- The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the pages.
- The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather.
- The books were fitted with clasps or straps.
- Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages.
- Books in public libraries were often chained to a bookshelf or a desk to prevent theft.
